Member Services 

Since 1869 the mission of the Hamilton Academy of Dentistry has been to provide support to its members in their pursuit of excellence in the practice of dentistry.  To fulfill this mandate, the Academy provides numerous services to its members including

• emergency weekend service

• mediation of disputes between patients and their HAD dentist

• continuing education programs

• social events including golf day, ski day, dinner dance, Stratford trip

• mentoring for new members of the profession

• liaison with media and other professional organizations

• public relations

• representation at the Ontario Dental Association

Weekend Emergency Service

RCDSO regulations stipulate that practicing dentists in Ontario must provide or arrange for treatment of dental emergencies for their patients at all hours.  Clearly a practitioner cannot always be on-call and available.

The Academy operates a service to provide for treatment of weekend emergencies for patients of HAD members.  Members are therefore responsible for being on-call only approximately one weekend every two years. 

The following protocol summarizes this program.

The HAD has implemented a new schedule strategy for the Weekend Emergency Services (WES).  The weekends are now assigned alphabetically to all eligible practicing members of the HAD, with new members being assigned special  holidays such as Christmas or New Year's Day.  This cycle will now end once all eligible members have been assigned a day, at which a new cycle will begin.  Because there is a disparity between the number of members and the number of weekends in a year, the time of year of your specific weekend will continuously change over the years. 

To ensure a smoothly running system, it is imperative for each member to assume their duties for their assigned weekend (less than once per year) knowing their HAD colleagues will be on call for all the others.
